Too Much Noise

Do you ever feel like you’re living amidst too much noise?

Little Girl Covering Ears ca. 2000

There was a time in my life when I liked noise. I loved, no needed, loud music, loud talkers, crowds and dance clubs.

Or so I thought. When I look back I enjoyed them for a certain amount of time and then I had enough. I didn’t know about introverts and extroverts back then. I didn’t know that it was ok to seek solace in my apartment, alone, with a book or my thoughts and regroup. I thought I had to be social. I can picture myself on a Saturday night. Desperately wanting to stay home on my couch, yet pulled by friends who wanted to party. Not wanting to appear “lame” I engaged in the noise.

I never wanted the noise.

Lately I’ve been feeling like I’m surrounded by too much noise. (A different noise, I’m no longer going to dance clubs!) It’s no one’s fault but my own. I have the tools I need to find peace. Sometimes I do and sometimes I forge on.

The noise could be Twitter, music, people talking, the roar of a lawn mower early on a Saturday morning, too much thinking, my own self-talk.

I get tired of hearing about how to do this, why I should do that, how to eat, how to live, how to write, how not to write, what to say, what not to say, how to run my business.

It’s gets to be too much. I can’t hear my thoughts or my true voice.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love people, enjoy social media, love listening to good music. But sometimes I start to feel the negative effects of the noise. I know it’s time for quiet when my eyes burn, my head aches, my body fidgets, I feel edgy and anxious, and all I want to do is close my eyes and take a nap.

Can you relate?

To find the peace I enjoy

  • a slow walk on the beach
  • meditation
  • yoga
  • reading
  • sipping a glass of wine or a spritzer while sitting on my deck
  • walking around the gardens in the back yard
  • a hike
  • sitting and observing my environment
  • closing my eyes for a quick nap
  • enjoying the company of 1 or 2 friends instead of a crowd

Your turn

How about you? Do you get tired of the noise? How do you find some peace and quiet in an otherwise always turned on world? Would love to hear your thoughts.

I recently got a hammock as a present and I find that a welcome break from the “noise” in my life!

Andrea, yes the backyard hammock is a great place to get away from it all! I should add it to my list!
